The magic of Maca

The use of maca dates back thousands of years in Peruvian culture. It’s grown at elevations of 12,000 or higher, making it VERY hearty. The root grows underground and looks similar to a turnip, though it comes in a variety of colors.

Traditionally, Peruvians have used maca root to promote mental acuity, physical vitality, endurance and stamina.

Additionally, not only is maca is packed with nutritional goodness (B-vitamins, calcium, magnesium), it belongs in a category of foods that are considered adaptogens. Adaptogens help our bodies adapt not only to stress, but also have the ability to regulate hormonal control, whether it be to increase or decrease a particular hormone that is out of balance.

We are not to say one root can do all these things, as different bodies respond differently to varying amounts of foods or herbs. But we urge you to give maca a try!

How to Use Maca
Good quality maca smells like a cross between peanut butter and burdock root–earthy and sweet. Most often the maca is dried and ground up into a powder that you can buy. Maca is becoming easier to find as more people discover its benefits. Most health food stores will sell the powder (look for organic) or you can find it online here.

You can easily take some of the powder and add it to any of the following recipes:

  • a smoothie  (such as this one)
  • pudding/mousse (try this one)
  • or even soup (add in after soup is cooked here)

Since all people react differently, it’s a good idea to start small – with about 1/2 teaspoon and work your way up to a few teaspoons daily and notice how you feel.

What about you?  Have you tried maca?  Let us know in the comments.
